Evening primrose is a flower that blooms at night and withers in the morning. The country of origin is Chile.
It blooms in July and is also called 'Wolgyeoncho' in oriental medicine.
Evening primrose oil is widely recognized for its benefits, often known for lowering cholesterol levels. This is because of the component called gamma-linolenic acid contained in evening primrose oil. Gammalinolenic acid is one of the unsaturated fatty acids that the human body cannot make, and must be taken with food. It was first discovered in evening primrose oil.
Gamma-linolenic acid can be obtained from breast milk, evening primrose oil, blackcurrant oil, and borage oil. This gamma-linolenic acid is a fatty acid that is not easily found in natural foods. However, the body can make some of this gamma-linolenic acid from linoleic acid. We usually get enough linoleic acid from cooking oil or meat. Evening primrose oil contains unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid and arachidonic acid as well as gamma-linolenic acid.
Linoleic acid, also called vitamin F, is a fatty acid needed for healthy skin and hair. It also has the effect of burning saturated fatty acids and reducing weight. It lowers cholesterol levels and helps prevent heart disease. This linoleic acid is found in abundance in sesame oil, perilla oil, legumes, cooking oils, and grain seeds. Unsaturated fatty acids are beneficial to the body, but excessive consumption can cause disease.
Evening primrose was originally cultivated by Native Americans to reduce body edema and was brought to Europe in the 17th century. As well as treating chest pain and eczema, it was considered almost a panacea. However, in 2002, the UK pharmaceutical and health care product regulator withdrew its marketing authorization for the treatment of eczema after questioning the efficacy of evening primrose oil. Gammalinolenic acid has long been used as a drug to modulate immune function as an anti-inflammatory substance that induces vasodilation and suppresses platelets. It is said to help relieve symptoms of atopic dermatitis to some extent. But these days, flaxseed is more recommended as a source of essential fatty acids for lowering cholesterol levels. Flaxseed contains large amounts of alpha-linolenic acid.
